CAN and CAN-FD Performance Evaluation of the Forlinx RK3506J SoM

Effective and dependable communication interfaces are essential for maintaining stable system operations in sectors such as industrial automation, energy management, and smart transportation. The Controller Area Network (CAN) bus technology has emerged as the preferred communication protocol in these fields due to its outstanding performance and versatility across various application scenarios. The FET3506J-S System on Module (SoM) is designed and developed by Forlinx Embedded, utilizing the Rockchip RK3506J processor. This industrial-grade, cost-effective main control product features a multi-core heterogeneous architecture and a variety of interface resources. It delivers stable and reliable support for a wide range of industrial applications.

It supports 2 x CAN-FD. This article will introduce the performance of CAN and CAN-FD interfaces.

CAN and CAN-FD Performance Evaluation of the Forlinx RK3506J SoM

1. Performance of speed test

The kernel version of the embedded RK3506J SoM used in this test is Linux6.1.

01 CAN Performance Test

Firstly, conduct CAN interface test, including 6 items: single-channel receiving only, multi-channel receiving only, single-channel sending only, multi-channel sending only, single-channel simultaneous sending and receiving, and multi-channel simultaneous sending and receiving. The specific test data are as follows:

CAN Bus Performance Test Results

No. Test Items Channel Baud Rate Frame Performance Note / Results
1 Single-channel receiving only 1 1M Extended ID frame 6800 frames per second Bus Occupancy 88% / Pass
2 Multi-channel receiving only 2 1M Extended ID frame 6800 frames per second Bus Occupancy 88% / Pass
3 Single-channel sending only 1 1M Extended ID frame 6500 frames per second Bus Occupancy 85% / Pass
4 Multi-channel sending only 2 1M Extended ID frame 6500 frames per second Bus Occupancy 85% / Pass
5 Single-channel simultaneous sending and receiving 1 1M Extended ID frame 7400 frames per second Bus Occupancy 89% / Pass
6 Multi-channel simultaneous sending and receiving 2 1M Extended ID frame 7300 frames per second Bus Occupancy 88% / Pass

Based on the test data, the CAN interface communication performance of the RK3506J SoM is exceptional:

① The receiving capability is normal, the bus occupancy rate is about 88%, and the single-channel or two-channel receiving will not cause frame loss;

① The receiving capability is normal, the bus occupancy rate is about 85%, and the single-channel or two-channel receiving will not cause frame loss;

③ Single-channel or 2-channel, 1:1 simultaneous sending and receiving, 88% bus occupancy, no frame loss, no space for transmission, etc.

The 2RK3506 SoM delivers exceptional performance for a wide range of industrial applications.

The results from our tests clearly demonstrate that the RK3506J SoM excels in its CAN and CAN-FD interfaces. It is packed with a diverse array of essential peripheral interfaces, such as RMII, UART, CAN, and Display etc.This board not only supports a high-speed parallel bus interface (DSMC) but also features a configurable parallel data interface (FlexBUS). Additionally, it employs a matrix I/O design that allows multiple functional signals to efficiently share limited pin interfaces.

With its robust interface configuration, the RK3506J SoM stands as a powerful solution for industries and applications including industrial automation, consumer electronics, smart healthcare, power, new energy, and communications.
